Heathrow is the UK’s largest airport and sees travellers arriving and departing to many international locations worldwide. The airport itself is 12 miles from the city centre and has 5 terminals. The newest, Terminal 5, was opened by the Queen in 2008.
The airport is located to the West of London and was previously a military airport used in the First World War. Initially know as the Great Western Aerodrome, Heathrow was used for flight testing and assembly in the 1930s when the main commercial airport was in Croydon. The airport was redesigned in 1944 when new runways were built. The airport saw developments throughout the next few decades with the addition of new larger terminals and better passenger access.
The airport is now frequented by over 90 airlines and is the home of BMI, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.
